Deal Then Tom can stand on the sidelines and watch a 47-year-old woman take the hit and maybe he'll learn something. If Tom Brady played during the "good old days", the days of John Matuzak and Jack Lambert, he'd have cashed out and moved to Iraq to feel safe. Oh, I dream of the good old days.. 27, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Steelcase (NYSE:SCS), aglobal office environments manufacturer, and the Institution Recycling Network(IRN) have joined forces to help organizations find environmentally responsiblesolutions for their unneeded office furniture. Through Steelcase's EnvironmentalPartnership Program, they are matching previously owned office furniture withnon-profit organizations around the globe."In the U.S. "Because Steelcase is a major provider of highereducation, healthcare and corporate environments, the partnership has beentremendously beneficial, allowing the organizations that work with us to makesignificant contributions to those that need it most."Donation recipients include U.S. cities devastated by natural disasters anddeveloping communities looking to build their infrastructures, which typicallyuse the furniture to build schools, clinics and businesses. The first week of January, the University of Notre Dame Law School moved intoits new 85,000 s.f facility.
The university had only a week to dispose of allthe furnishings in the previous facility to make way for renovation. Afterconsulting with Steelcase dealer, Business Furnishings, who introduced them tothe Steelcase Environmental Partnership Program, the university decided topartner with IRN to donate the furniture. IRN arranged for the removal of thefurniture and matched it with the non-profit organization Food for the Poor.Because of Notre Dame's action, eight containers of more than 1,600 pieces offurniture will be diverted from the landfill to charitable organizations inJamaica and Haiti. Additionally, donating their furniture actually cost theuniversity less than discarding it."We try to reuse all we can that comes out of old facilities through ouron-campus surplus program," said Julie Boynton, senior project manager forinteriors in Notre Dame's Office of the University Architect. "In the case ofthe law school, there was so much, the surplus program didn't have room for itall.

In this partnership with Steelcase and IRN, we've found an answer to thisproblem that is a win-win-win: The furniture isn't going to a landfill, twoworthy charities are receiving much needed furnishings, and the project actuallysaved Notre Dame money. It cost $14,000 to have IRN recycle the furniture, butwould have cost around $20,000 to send it all to a landfill not to mentionthe untold cost to the environment."Steelcase dealers and clients around the country are beginning to tap into theIRN partnership in similar projects, identifying specific furniture that matchesnon-profit needs in establishing or rebuilding hospitals, schools, andresidential communities. Here in the U.S., large quantities of furniture arebeing directed to reconstruction projects in Texas following Hurricane Ike."Furniture that is no longer needed by one organization can provide tremendousvalue to another. "We want to not only help organizationsresponsibly and effectively manage their unused furniture, but extend the lifeof that furniture into other businesses and communities that need it."Launched in 2004, the Steelcase Environmental Partnership is the first programin its industry to help businesses determine and implement the best end-of-lifefurniture strategy for their furniture regardless of who originallymanufactured it.Through this program, organizations can extend the useful life of theirfurniture in several potential ways: refurbishing the furniture; selling ordonating the furniture to another organization; or recycling the furniture, withthe goal of minimizing the amount put in a landfill.About The Institution Recycling NetworkThe Institution Recycling Network is a cooperative organization that works withover 125 colleges and universities, hospitals, private firms, public and privateschools and state agencies to improve the performance and economics of theirrecycling programs.
