Juniper is one of the "Plumbers" of the Internet. Like Cisco, this American company sells equipment installed in central offices of the operators or radio antennas: routers that direct Internet traffic. Kevin Johnson led Juniper for two years. He previously spent sixteen years at Microsoft, where, as President of the platforms and services division, he attempted to buy Yahoo.
Juniper has survived the bubble and continues to grow alongside giants like Cisco. What is it that makes your specificity

Juniper was created 14 years ago, at the time when the Internet began just to become public. Therefore needed to find solutions for the network change of scale and supports the growing volume of connections. It is at this time that we invented our first wave of heart of network routers. They were one hundred times more powerful than the equipment of the time. Today, we are present in the major global networks, the heart and the periphery of the Internet simultaneously. We offer our customers our "new network", an open and horizontal manner to provide solutions to an ecosystem of partners. This is to transform the economy from a sector working on programming interfaces, kits for developers... Because it will not be able to keep pace with growth of the Internet with the same approach as in the past.
The telecoms, including Chinese suppliers, therefore come compete you in your field. Don't you be afraid a price crash, a commoditization of your business
We have a lot of good competitors and it's a good thing. But we are confident in our ability to innovate. We will invest almost $ 1 billion this year to develop our new network, we have therefore no fear of commoditization.
According to Ericsson, there could be 50 billion of objects connected to here to 2020 in the world. The network is able to withstand it all
There are 6.7 billion people on Earth. During the ten years, the activity of operators oa funded without problems investments, because the number of consumers has grown constantly. But, when there will be 50 billion connected objects, the number of subscribers will be little progress... How will the operators who develop network finance As, over the next decade, the consumption of data growth will be exponential. It doubles every year, with users who use video in mobility, on "smartphones", tomorrow on the shelves... At Juniper, we believe that the investment will start to exceed their means in three or four years: 2014 will be the year where the economic model of Internet will break.
How to avoid this failure
The first response is to allow access to the Internet providers test new economic models, such as the payment to the amount of data. ATT and O2 already do to avoid that some consumes network resources. The second solution is to reduce the cost per bit of traffic. To do this, OEMs must change their approach. Networks must become open and programmable - talking smart networks. Instead of sending a video through the main arteries of the Internet, you can store it in local servers, it consumes less bandwidth. Operators must also achieve the fixed and mobile convergence by creating one network "all IP", instead of two which previously coexisted. Finally, third solution, find new sources of revenue with new services. This may be the "triple play", already in France. We also propose our JunOS Pulse software, which allows secure mobile access to the data of the company, with authentication, anti-virus, etc. It works now on iPhone and iPad, on Android, BlackBerry, Symbian.
The development of distributed computing, or "cloud computing", sounded the death knell of the era of the personal computer
We went from the era of the great centers of calculation ("mainframe") to that of the client-server architecture with PCs for each user. But maintain servers in companies is expensive. It is for this reason that the Web 2.0 approach is developed. It is to submit applications to the centre of the network, in a "data centers". The computing power and storage are re-centralized. And yet, users have more power than ever, because the terminals become even more intelligent. Look at the "smartphones", the new laptops... And this is only a beginning. When Apollo 7 on the Moon was sent, there is less embedded intelligence in an iPhone!
